Is It Already Too Late to Be Ready for the February 2027 Battery Passport Deadline?
With the 18 February 2027 deadline approaching, here's an honest back-plan of what takes months (supplier data, due diligence) versus what takes weeks (publishing), and where to start.
The short answer
No — but the order you do things in now matters more than the total effort. The passport project has one genuinely slow track (getting data out of suppliers) and several fast tracks (organizing your own data, generating the passport itself). Teams that fail won't fail because publishing a passport is hard; they'll fail because they started the slow track last.
One immediate pressure release: the deadline applies to placing batteries on the market from 18 February 2027. Your existing inventory is not retroactively in scope.
The honest back-plan
Working backward from February 2027:
- Supplier data requests and contract updates — start immediately. Cell chemistry by weight, critical raw material origins, due-diligence report references, and carbon footprint contributions all come from outside your company. Every week of delay here is a week you can't recover later, because you're waiting on someone else's legal and engineering teams.
- Due-diligence programme for critical raw materials — runs in parallel, takes months. The OECD-aligned obligations for cobalt, lithium, nickel, and natural graphite are documentation-heavy and depend on the supplier track above.
- Internal data inventory — weeks, not months. Your ERP, test stations, and engineering records already hold identifiers, capacity ratings, cell-lot genealogy, and BMS versions. The work is mapping fields, not creating data.
- Carbon footprint calculation — schedule around the methodology. The regulation requires its own calculation method, not a generic PCF, and carbon footprint declarations already phase in earlier than the passport itself (EV batteries first). If you haven't done one, this belongs on the slow track.
- Publishing layer — weeks. Turning an assembled dataset into a QR-resolvable, per-unit passport record is the most automatable step in the chain. It should be the last thing you worry about, not the first.
The mistake that wastes the remaining time
The most common failure mode is inverting the list: spending months evaluating passport platforms and QR formats while no one has emailed a supplier. The publishing layer can be stood up quickly at the end; a due-diligence chain cannot be conjured in the final quarter.
A realistic quarter-by-quarter shape
- Now: supplier data clauses out the door; internal field inventory done; scope check per product line.
- +1 quarter: first supplier data arriving; carbon footprint work underway; gaps identified per SKU.
- +2 quarters: complete datasets for lead SKUs; dry-run passports generated and reviewed.
- Final quarter: remaining SKUs filled in; publishing connected to production identifiers; buffer for the suppliers who deliver late (some will).
What this means for your team
If you start the supplier and due-diligence tracks this month, February 2027 is comfortably reachable. The window where this becomes a genuine emergency is when those tracks still haven't started with less than two quarters remaining — and even then, the answer is triage by SKU, not surrender.
