Why the timeline is category-by-category, not one deadline

Unlike a single cutover date, the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) works through delegated acts issued per product category. Each category gets its own DPP data requirements, phase-in period, and enforcement date, set out in a rolling working plan rather than the regulation's text itself.

That makes "when do we need a DPP" a per-product-line question, not a company-wide one.

Dates for categories beyond batteries move as the European Commission finalizes each delegated act — treat anything past batteries as directional until the act is published, not a hard commitment.

What "requirement" actually triggers

For batteries, the February 2027 date applies to placing a new battery on the EU market — not to inventory already in the supply chain. Existing stock isn't retroactively required to carry a passport, but any unit manufactured or imported after the threshold date is in scope.

Practical sequencing if you sell in multiple categories

1. Identify which of your SKUs fall into an already-dated category (batteries first) and treat that as your real deadline.
2. Build the data pipeline once, not per category. The underlying data model — material composition, carbon footprint, supply chain origin — is largely shared across categories, even though field-level schemas differ.
3. Track the ESPR working plan directly, since delegated acts for textiles and electronics are still being finalized and dates can move.

Companies waiting for a single "DPP deadline" announcement will miss the batteries deadline, because it's already fixed and earlier than most other categories.
