The short answer
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured, machine-readable dataset attached to a physical product — accessible via a QR code, NFC tag, or RFID chip — that records where a product came from, what it's made of, and what should happen to it at end of life.
It is not a single document or PDF. It's a data record with a defined schema, meant to be read by software: customs systems, recyclers, resellers, and repair shops, not just humans scanning a code in a store.
What data actually lives in a DPP
Most regulatory frameworks converge on a similar core dataset:
- Material composition — down to substance level for regulated materials (e.g. hazardous substances under REACH).
- Origin and supply chain — manufacturing location, and increasingly, supplier-level traceability.
- Carbon and environmental footprint — product carbon footprint (PCF), calculated per unit or per batch.
- Repairability and durability — spare parts availability, repair scoring, expected lifespan.
- End-of-life instructions — disassembly guidance, recyclability percentage, take-back program details.
The exact fields required differ by product category — a battery passport and a textile passport share a data model but not an identical field list.
Why now
The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force in 2024, makes DPPs mandatory on a rolling, category-by-category basis. Batteries are first, with requirements phasing in from February 2027 under the separate EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542). Textiles and electronics follow under ESPR's own working plan.
Companies that sell into the EU — regardless of where they manufacture — will need a DPP-ready data pipeline before their product category's compliance date, not after.
What this means for your team
Building DPP compliance is fundamentally a data-integration problem before it's a compliance problem: pulling consistent, structured data out of ERP, PLM, and supplier systems, and exposing it through a standard, queryable format. Teams that start with a clean internal data model now avoid a much more expensive scramble once their category's deadline is fixed.
